Food Prices Rise, Canteen Vendors Bear the Burden as Ramadan Approaches

March 03, 2025

Tuesday, February 18, 2025. As Ramadan approaches, food prices have been gradually rising, and the public is starting to feel the impact. The price of basic ingredients like chicken, fish, and vegetables is increasing rapidly. Despite this, some canteen vendors have chosen to maintain their regular selling prices to keep their customers.

One canteen vendor at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education at Sriwijaya University shared, “Even though production costs have increased, I haven’t raised the prices, so the customers who usually eat here don’t notice. It’s us as vendors who are feeling the impact of the rising food prices,” She said.

According to her, keeping the prices stable is a way to retain customers in hers canteen. However, this cannot last long if the price hikes continue. “If the price increase remains stable and temporary, I won’t raise the selling price to the consumers, but if this continues in the long term, we will be forced to raise the prices of the food we sell,” he added.

According to a report from Kementrian Perdagangan Republik Indonesia, the rising demand for food ingredients is one of the factors contributing to the increase in the prices of most basic commodities.

In addition, Pusat Informasi Harga Pangan Strategis (PIHPS) recorded that almost all food ingredients have seen price hikes, with the highest increase being red chili peppers, which surged by 28.64%, or around Rp. 103,600 per kilogram. Meanwhile, other food ingredients such as rice, oil, and sugar have not yet experienced price increases.

While this may be beneficial for customers, the canteen vendors still hope that food prices will not rise further beyond normal levels, as this would mean longer periods of earning less profit than usual.
